Volunteering provides students with an opportunity to become active members of society and create a positive impact, no matter how big or small, on the lives of those around them. While community service is not a Bourne High School graduation requirement, the guidance department highly encourages all students grades 9-12 to engage in service to our school and larger community. Volunteering has a wide range of benefits, including but not limited to, opportunities to:
Students participating in volunteer work are advised to keep a log/record of activities over time and obtain supervisor signatures when service is complete. BOURNE FRIENDS FOOD PANTRY/ COUNCIL ON AGING
The mission of the Bourne Friends Food Pantry is to assist individuals and families in the town of Bourne that do not have the resources to provide themselves or their families with adequate nutrition. For clients who are disabled or homebound, the Food Pantry volunteers will make home deliveries subsequent to an initial face to face interview at the Food Pantry. Office Volunteers at the Friends of Bourne Council on Aging office help with day-to-day operations and administrative tasks that are essential to help us continue to do the work that we do.

Our student volunteer program is extremely popular and there is a limited number of openings. Therefore, in order to be fair to the many students who inquire about our summer volunteer program all year long, we will ONLY begin to accept application requests from students for summer 2020 on FEBRUARY 24, 2020 and until our quota for student volunteers is reached.Students need to return to our web site on or after February 24, 2020 and complete the on-line “Request a Volunteer Application” form at that time. Please understand that requests submitted before February 24, 2020 will not be considered for summer 2020.
CAPE COD LITERACY COUNCIL
Are you a bi-lingual student? Looking to practice English, meet new people, learn about college and career opportunities for foreigners? This is a great program for you! The Cape Cod Literacy Council is offering training to high school students to assist ELL instructors during night classes at Barnstable High School a couple of nights a week for 3 hours. CHARITABLE EVENT OPPORTUNITIES: MASSACHUSETTS BREAST CANCER COALITION (MBCC)
MBCC is hosting its annual Against the Tide athletic fundraising events as both virtual and in-person events this summer. There will be two virtual events, each with a 7-day participation window: Against the Tide June Virtual Event – June 20th – 26th and Against the Tide August Virtual Event – August 8th – 14th. Participants can swim, run, walk, paddle, or kayak in a safe location of their choosing.
Additionally, MBCC is hoping to offer an in-person event on August 14th at DCR’s Nickerson State Park pending state approval. If due to COVID restrictions, MBCC is not able to host this event in person, all registrations will be transferred to the Against the Tide August Virtual Event.
Registration for individuals is just $40, and students are invited to join us for $25 using the code STUDENT. All participants will also receive an event t-shirt and sponsor items!

We are also looking for students to help us with outreach efforts on social media. This is a great opportunity for student volunteers to perform community service by assisting us in preparation for our events.
Supporting and participating in our events helps to fund MBCC’s community education and outreach efforts, providing valuable health information to citizens across the state on ways to reduce their exposure to toxic chemicals. Kind Hearts for Kids
The Kind Hearts for Kids is an organization that works with foster/kinship kids. One event that they typically need support with is hosting a summer carnival at Indian Head resort in Plymouth (right off of route 3A headed toward Manomet) where volunteers to help run games etc. In 2020 it ran on June 23rd from 3:30-6pm.
NATIONAL MARINE LIFE CENTER
Volunteers are the key to the National Marine Life Center’s success! Every hour of service is a valued contribution to NMLC’s mission of rehabilitating and releasing stranded marine mammals and sea turtles, advancing science, and educating about marine wildlife health and conservation. PEER TUTORING
BHS Guidance is always looking for student volunteers to help tutor others in a range of subject areas. If you are interested gaining some volunteer hours as a tutor, please let your guidance counselor know and we will work to pair you with a student.

ROGER WILLIAMS PARK ZOO
Love animals? The Roger Williams Park Zoo is now accepting applications for their Youth Advisory Council. Participation in the RWPZ Youth Advisory Council requires a commitment of 2 years with participation in an orientation weekend and weekly meetings. Participation in the council is unpaid. Members will serve as a voice for youth within the Zoo and community. Youth Advisory Council members will collaborate to lead, design, and execute various initiatives and projects that will positively impact the Zoo, community, animals, and the environment. SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Special Olympics Massachusetts volunteers are generous, impactful people who are building sustainable communities of acceptance and inclusion. Through the action of each volunteer, more athletes are training, competing, and experiencing the joy of high quality sports. For more information

Students placed stickers on bags for liquor stores to remind people to refrain from underage drinking and to be safe.
